dump cake in bowl

Note: I first wrote this post in 2014. Dump Cake is still a quick and easy dessert option, especially if you need to fix a dessert for an event after a full day of homeschooling. Life Hack 101!

I just made what is quite possibly the easiest, cheapest baked dessert in the history of the world. Okay, maybe that’s exaggerating just a bit, but it was super easy, super cheap, and super yummy. It’s called Dump Cake, and it’s a great dessert to make when you don’t have much time but still want to pull something luscious from the oven.

My mother-in-law first introduced me to the concept of Dump Cake a few years ago. It sounded so easy, I knew I had to give it try. But it wasn’t until she visited today that all the pieces came together. I had some canned peaches I wanted to use, and I didn’t have anything planned for dessert. My kitchen was a bit of a disaster after making fried chicken and homemade biscuits for lunch, and I was craving a home-baked treat. The last thing I wanted was to dirty more mixing bowls, so I figured Dump Cake was the perfect choice.

It took all of five minutes to dump it all in a casserole dish (hence the name, “dump”). Then all we had to do was wait, while the fantastic smells of baking peaches filled the kitchen.

Let me tell you, it was worth the wait. I decided to top it off with some homemade whipped cream, and all I can say is, “Mmmmmmm.” Talk about comfort food! In case you, too, need a dessert in a pinch that is sure to impress, here’s how to make Dump Cake.

6. Bake for 45 – 50 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes. (This is important. You need to use extreme self control here, because it will smell so good that all you will want to do is dig in. Don’t. You’ll burn yourself, and then you won’t be able to taste all that yummy goodness.)

7. Serve in a bowl with whipped cream, ice cream, or all by itself.

8. Sit back and let everyone tell you how delicious Dump Cake is and then listen to them ask you for the recipe. (Sharing how easy Dump Cake is to make is entirely up to you. Feel free to let people think you slaved in the kitchen for hours making peach cobbler. I will never reveal your secret. I promise.) 🙂
